Align Your Time Management with Your Values

There was a time when my life felt like a constant whirlwind of chaos and stress. Working in the entertainment industry, I'd often find myself working 12- to 14-hour production days, leaving little room for anything else.

I'd rush through each day, barely finding time to catch my breath, let alone keep track of my belongings. Misplacing keys, spilling coffee, it seemed like every little mishap added to the overwhelming sense of hot mess express.

Even when I left the entertainment industry to start my social media business in 2018, the chaos followed. Moving back in with my mom added another layer of complexity, her desire to spend time with me, left me torn between my responsibilities and wanting to be present with her. In trying to juggle everything, I often found myself overwhelmed and resentful.

It was through these challenges that I came to realize the importance of managing time by aligning it with my values, so that I can be in control of my emotions and thoughts. For me, personal growth meant prioritizing peace, spirituality, gratitude, emotional maturity, fun, and joy. Understanding these values meant serving God, being there for my family, finding balance, and having time to truly enjoy life by mastering my emotions and mental chaos like overwhelm, anxiety and depression.

Realizing that to prioritize my top value, peace, I needed to master not only time management but also my reactions. Recognizing the rapid pace of the world we live in, I set out on a mission to refine my time management skills and ensure that my time aligns with my values for the sake of my mental well-being.

Here's how you too, can manage your time to match your values:

  1. Identify Your Values: Start by reflecting and determining what truly matters to you in life. Think about your core beliefs, principles, and long-term goals. Prioritize them based on significance. Keep your top priority at the center of your life.

  2. Align Your Daily Habits and Activities with Your Values: Prioritize activities that support your values and consider delegating or eliminating those that don't. For instance, if health is a core value, schedule time for exercise and nutritious meals even if it's 10 minutes of running or 10 minutes of yoga.

  3. Adjust Your Schedule When Necessary: Regularly review your schedule to assess if you're dedicating enough time to activities aligned with your values. Reflect on your progress and feelings—are you satisfied and fulfilled? Adjust your schedule as needed

  4. Communicate Your Values: Clearly express your values to others, whether it's colleagues, friends, or family. This creates understanding and support, minimizing conflicts and distractions.

  5. Stay Balanced with Your Values: Acknowledge that values may evolve and conflict. Strive for balance and engage in activities like mindfulness to manage stress. I know that although I value peace, living in this world can sometimes feel chaotic. However, I recognize that I have control over my emotions. So when I feel the stress, overwhelm, and chaos creeping into my mind and body, I make sure to engage in activities like mindful walking, journaling, praying, or meditation to regain my balance.

  6. Acknowledge when you live by your values. This reinforces positive habits and boosts well-being.Create a gratitude list to remind you of when you felt most at peace, balanced and connected to your values.

By managing your time in alignment with your values, you can cultivate a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life.
